SUITABILITY: Red easily surpasses the age requirement at twenty-five years old; On A Leash is mostly set in a warzone, but does dip into life behind the lines and is focused quite a bit on Red's developing relationship with Luce and navigating the perils of war and their (at times) clashing personalities. She grows over the course of the story - and at roughly midway point, she's sort of come to grips with knowing what she wants and being willing to participate in something more sexual and physical. However, I think seeing her grapple with having to be with more than one person and figuring out how she squares this with her desire for a relationship back home would make for an interesting development for her here! Along with her own sense of determination and how aggro she can be at times.
HISTORY: Irene Red is an orphan; she was raised in a school-slash-orphanage with a group of other children, including her best friend, Edge. While she was a child she was exposed to some of the strange secrets of her world's people - the presence of those with even more power in their beastforms than normal. However, this wouldn't come back to her for quite a while in life. As a child she had plans for working hard and building a house for herself and her friend to live in, but as she started to grow older this eventually was derailed by an all encompassing war that engulfed her country (the United States of Mammalia) and their neighbors. The nation of Volk - a nation of bird beastmen - attacked the Reptile Republic and Irene's nation was likewise dragged in. Thinking she was going to defend her home - and prevent other people from dying - Red signed up and enlisted for the duration of the war. Since then she's been fighting on the frontlines with her company, enduring the hellish nature of modern warfare.
While on the front, she had a strange encounter with a reptilian surgeon named Luce and the two of them developed what could only be described of (at first) as a toxic relationship, with Luce using her for sex and Red responding in kind, confused about what it was Luce actually wanted from her. The two of them bickered, went back, and forth, but eventually Red grew fonder of her through a series of events where the two needed to work together and both saved one another's lives (most notably when they foiled an avian operation in an abandoned mine and almost died). By the time she arrives in the hotel, she's determined that she wants a real relationship with her - not just the strange tempest of rough sex and escapism they've been sharing before. Along the way she's also gotten some exposure (again) to the secret underbelly of her world's people... although she doesn't quite understand it.
ABILITIES: BEASTMAN: In Irene's world, all humans can also turn or shift into an anthromorphic animal or beastman - while in this form, they are generally more resilient to physical damage and have somewhat faster/more robust healing capability. It can also grant other abilities - birdmen can fly, for example. In Irene's case, she has an exquisite sense of smell, so much so that she can sense peoples emotions based on it.
SOLDIERING: Even beyond just being a physically fit soldier, Irene is fast on her feet, strong, and a very skilled combatant. So much so that she's become a war hero and bounced back from terrible wounds (with some help). She's probably near peak-human capabilities in some respects. Or just very lucky. She's also a dab hand with firearms and explosives.
VICES: STUBBORNRed can be incredibly pig-headed and hard to move once she's made a decision, which is honestly to her detriment at times. It took her a long time to come around to Luce (although this was, to be fair, partially because Luce was being a massive weirdo). More to the point, if she thinks what she's doing is the right course of action, dissuading her can a difficult task - she'll tend to go ahead and do it, even if it's not the best idea or if someone in authority above her has told her she ought not to; she'll brush past guards or medical staff, even if they tell her to stop or slow down. Similarly, she's been known to dig her heels in and to try and make the world move - for example, when Edge (her best friend, someone she ought to be willing to listen to) tried to dissuade her from pursuing her relationship with Luce, Red absolutely refused to budge - she wasn't going to give up on it.
BRASH/IMPULSIVELikewise, Red can be very impulsive or brash at times - honestly it's probably her largest vice. She'll leap without looking, usually jumping into the fray or going chasing after someone without stopping to think too hard about it. Perhaps the ur-example is when she signed up for the military in the first place - she wanted to protect the people she cared about and the military seemed like the best place to go for that after war broke out, so she went ahead and did it without too much thought to what that might mean for the future (or how Edge, who was already serving, might feel about her risking her life). It also means she gets herself into trouble - early in her relationship with Luce she simply barged into a meeting she was having solely to try and return something to clear a nebulous "debt" - and ended up worsening an injury she had recently suffered by leaving bed rest too early.
HOT-TEMPEREDRed has a temper; she'll get into fights or arguments and it feeds into her stubbornness and sense of impulsiveness. Throughout the story, she's quite willing to raise her voice (or her fists) if she thinks it's needed or feels like she needs to (she does, to be fair, cool off relatively quickly, but combined her stubborn impulsiveness and sense of pride, she can often get into trouble). Her whole relationship with Luce starts out like this - it's very much a case of them bickering and arguing, with Red rising to the bait everytime Luce dangles it in front of her and the two spiraling along. Fortunately, it ends up less toxic after a time... but for a while, it's very much a matter of "fighting leading to passion".
VIRTUES: HARD-WORKING/RESPONSIBLEThis is honestly one of Red's core traits; she's a hard worker at heart and feels responsible for the tasks she's given. Ever since she was young, she has had the idea of making money and eventually building a house for herself and her friends and this has carried on into her life at the front and her work in the military. When there's work to be done, such as improving a trench or a mission to be carried out, she tends to volunteer or jump to it, even when injured. She'll put her all into her tasks and this has earned her more than a few friends along the way - and respect. No point in leaving something undone if she's just sitting around, after all.
BRAVERed has a great deal of personal and physical courage; throughout her time in the military she has fought on countless battlefields and could often be found throwing herself into the hottest part of the action for the sake of her fellow soldiers. She'll dash into gunfire or hand-to-hand combat without hesitation or fight, even when outnumbered. It's not a lack of fear, of course, but it is an ability to press on even when things seem bleak and there's danger all around. So much so that she earned the nickname "Red Dog of Fortune" from her comrades - because her bravery, personal courage, and ability to escape tight spots has helped her (and them) survive the war so far.
KINDRed has an innate sense of kindness and justice that she tends to exert and indulge in. She wants to help those less fortunate than her, even if they're someone she's previously been at odds with - most clearly with Luce, when the other woman was wounded. Despite their bickering, terrible relationship up to that point, Red was unwilling to simply leave her on her own to die or to suffer. Instead she did her best to help and to ease her pain, even though they'd been at one another's throats previously. Some of this kindness is a result of her upbringing - she was raised in an orphanage and a part of her remembers and acknowledges that her foster mother figure did so much for her and her other "siblings" that she wants to pay it forward and likewise help others around her.
SUIT REQUESTS: HEARTSI think Hearts would be an interesting suit to throw Red at. She has a big heart herself and a sense of kindness and justice inherent to her that could be turned against her in a way, along with her temper and sense of impulsiveness. She could absolutely become a worse version of herself here as she tries to deal with all of the temptations and obstacles that get thrown in her way - but she could also hold on to what makes her a good person and come out the other side stronger for it as she navigates her own emotions urging her to do things she normally wouldn't consider. It'd be a touch of corruption and twisted desires fighting with her own sense of right and wrong - something that'd be a lot of fun to explore, especially if it also plays a bit on the more bestial side she has because of her transformation ability. Let her fight the good fight!
CLUBSClubs would be another interesting one to explore; she already has some issues with self-control so her mind slowly breaking down and leaving her more vulnerable to her own impulses would be an fun tack to take with her. Likewise, the possibility of delusions or hallucinations or other impacts as she tries to dig herself in and fight it could also lead to interesting outcomes (if not necessarily happy ones). This would be a bit darker for her than hearts, I think, since there's less chance of romance, but it would definitely have her dealing with something that's outside of her normal wheelhouse (her own mind, weird dreams, hallucinations, etc.) and the struggle with that could be a fun way to spur growth or make her adapt in ways that she hadn't previously considered.
